The City of Pearland Fire Department responded to a kitchen fire in a three story apartment building located in the 2200 Block of Business Center Drive on Sunday afternoon. Upon arrival, they found that the fire had been extinguished by the residential fire sprinkler system installed in the building.
This fire was determined to have been caused by a cooking accident and the investigation is currently considered closed by investigators. At the time of the fire, two of the residents were sleeping in the apartment and the sprinkler and fire alarm system are credited with saving their lives, as well as protecting the lives and property of everyone living in this apartment complex.
Every year, thousands of civilian injuries and billions of dollars worth of property damage are caused by residential fires. Studies conducted by the US Fire Administration have indicated that the installation of residential fire sprinklers could have saved thousands of lives, as well as eliminated hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. Furthermore the cost of these systems runs approximately $1.00 to $1.50 per square foot when installed in new home construction. This amount is a relatively small cost concerning the amount of security and protection these systems provide. Furthermore, many insurance companies offer a discount, which usually ranges between 5 and 15 percent, depending on the company. This helps offset the cost of the system and makes it more affordable for individual home owners. In the case of this apartment fire, the results could have been devastating if no sprinkler had been installed. The Pearland Fire Marshal recommends that all homeowners consider installing a residential sprinkler system in their home.
