The City of Pearland is reporting that, due to current extremely hot and dry conditions, the city's water system has been operating at approximately 75% of capacity for over a week. Assistant City Manager Jon Branson said that, according to the City's Drought Contingency Plan, when the system operates at 80% of capacity for three consecutive days, the City may need to go to Stage 2 of the plan, which would entail a mandatory reduction in usage following the same guidelines listed below.
Branson explained that the City currently has thirteen (13) water sources, and if one of those sources were to become unavailable for any reason, it is likely that areas of the city would experience very low water pressure or a water shortage. Any high-flow situation, such as a residential fire or a brush fire, could result in very low water pressure in the affected area. "Therefore, we are asking all citizens to become more aware of their water use, especially with regard to outdoor watering". Residents are asked to limit non-essential water use to the hours of 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. or 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Odd-numbered addresses are requested to water on odd dates and even-numbered addresses are requested to water on even dates. For example, 3519 Liberty Drive can water on June 17, 19, 21, etc. since the address ends in an odd number. "At this time, we need everyone's help to ensure that the city continues to have adequate water capacity and pressure during this demanding time", said Branson.
