2011 ARSON AWARENESS WEEK - MAY 1 - 7
In an effort to raise public awareness, May 1 - 7 has been declared "Arson Awareness Week". The goal of this year's Arson Awareness week is to focus on serial arson related fires and the damage that these crimes cause within the community.
According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), fires associated with serial arsonists accounted for more than $4.8 million lost during 2009-2010. Last year, intentionally set fires represented about 13% of total fires responded to in the U.S., resulting in an average of 375 deaths, 1,300 injuries and $1.06 billion in property loss. The Houston area has seen high-profile cases reported in Kingwood, the Heights, and Southwest Houston.
The City of Pearland Fire Marshal's Division of the Pearland Fire Department is committed to protecting the lives and property of the citizens of Pearland from arson. The Fire Marshal's Division utilizes state-of-the-art forensic tools to assist investigators, including an accelerant canine team, advanced lab techniques such as DNA analysis and gas chromatography, and electronic forensics tools such as cell phone forensics. These high-tech tools aid the investigator in his or her analysis of the crime scene, as well as provide valuable information used to facilitate the arrest and ultimate conviction of arsonists.
